  • Hakone Daichakai

    Sunday, October 18, 2009
Hakone Garden, 21000 Big Basin Way, Saratoga, California
    11:00-11.45 A.M. Registration
    12:00-5:00 P.M. Chaseki

The Hakone Foundation is proud to host the ninth Hakone Daichakai on October 18, 2009 at Hakone Gardens in Saratoga, California. The Hakone Daichakai is one of the most important and enjoyable tea events in the greater bay area: important in that it brings together tea practitioners of different tea traditions and enjoyable in the beauty and suitability of its location and enthusiasm of its participants. The hope is that all who practice tea will desire to attend in order to share tea with their fellow practitioners at one of the few sites where this type of event is possible outside of Japan.

This year those who practice Omotesenke, Urasenke, Mushanokoji and Matsuoryu will be hosting thin or thick tea at various garden sites.

Anyone wishing to attend should PRE-REGISTER BY OCTOBER 9, 2009 with a check made out to Hakone Foundation for $50, per person attending, to Hakone Daichakai c/o John Larissou, 2651 25th Ave, San Francisco CA 94116-2904. Pre-registration is desirable as seats are pre-assigned and seating is limited. Of course preferences are honored if possible. We encourage you to tell us your seating preferences. Admission is to at least three tea sites and includes a small box lunch. Those not pre-registering may attend but seating is not guaranteed. Tickets will be distributed on the day of the event during the registration period.

All fees go to the foundation and help to maintain and improve this beautiful garden. This is an enjoyable event for the participants and it supports a good cause.

  • Dai Bosatsu Zendo 2009
    Tentative schedule for June event
    Wedensday, June 10 - Sunday, June 14, 2009
    Livingston Manor, NY

    Hi All,

We've got some very exciting workshops and lectures already in the works for our next gathering at DBZ in June 2008. Here's an update of what we have so far...

    Lectures:

    1. Eido Roshi will be giving a lecture on calligraphy and scrolls for tea. He will also have his calligraphy for sale so if you have a particular scroll you would like him to do for you, please email bettina@amacord.com and let me know what that is. We'll need this before December 2008.
He's also offered to give a gomei for your dogu, so if you have a special bowl or chashaku, he'll name it and write the name on the box. He'll need to see a picture before the event, which you can send also to me.
    2. Asher Browne is a landscape designer trained in Japan. He worked in the gardens of Mushakoji Senke. He will be giving a lecture on Roji and it should be excellent.
    3. I have just met a wonderful American potter, Sue Kotulak, who works in the Shigaraki style and makes fabulous hanaire. She just had a show in Tivoli, NY and I helped arrange chabana in her vases for the show. I have a tentative yes from her for a talk on Anagama firing and pottery making in the Japanese style.
She will also bring her work for purchase. I had to restrain myself at her show from coming home with armloads of her work - it's great.

    Classes & Workshops:

    • Sachiko Chernin of Tea Circle will be offering a class on making Shifiku. The class will meet everyday. More details later. Sachiko makes beautiful custom Shifiku that you can see on her site http://www.tea-circle.com/. We're very excited to have this opportunity to work with her during the event.
    • Chashaku and Okashi making. Chabana. These are in the works.
    • We're open for suggestions, so if you want to offer a class or workshop - please write us.

    Yoga:

    • The DBZ Yoga teacher has become intrigued with Tea and I have invited her to come to our event and offer yoga for us everyday. I can tell you from experience that she intuitively knows just what you need when you need it. Tea people put a lot of strain on their legs, back and knees (not to mention most every other part of our bodies) and it will be great to work with her in a gentle manner on strengthening and loosening our bodies.
    • Roji & Tea Space Slide Show - In Santa Fe people sent photos of their tea houses, tea spaces and gardens which were put together into a slide show. It was great to see and we hope to do that again. We'd also love to see slides of some of your memorable tea events.

More to come. This will be a wonderful event and we hope you can make it. Let us know your thoughts and ideas. Post on the blog. This is your event and we welcome everyone's participation.

    Best,

    Bettina
