Sakurasaku Glass

Usually when serving drinks, one tries to prevent condensation rings on tables - hence the use of coasters. However, this simple yet unique glass proposes a different kind of solution to this phenomenon. The normally unconsious action of lifting and setting down a glass becomes art as sakura flowers are left on the table.

Masahiro Mori

Masahiro Mori's industrial designs of everyday eating utensils are known the world over. Ahead of his time, Mori revolutionized Japanese traditional ceramics by mixing traditional forms with a modern sensibility. Through his elegant and modern designs, he influenced ceramic production and marketing, changing the global perception that ‘Made in Japan’ meant 'cheap'.

In 1960, an arm of the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry established the Good Design Prize; a prize given to outstanding examples of industrial design fusing form and function. His work has been selected 111 times, making him the most celebrated designer since the prize's inception. He has won many other international prizes for his work as well.

Mori experimented with various forms including 300 decorative variations on the traditional Japanese 'shallow rice bowl', natural objects as handles on mugs, and even creating indented cups for the visually-impaired. These cups, which were designed in 1969, were originally designed to allow people to distinguish what is contained soley by feeling the cup. It is just one of his many timeless designs.
